Honours Bachelor of Science in Advanced Engineering Technology – NFQ Level 8
About the Course
In September 2009 we are introducing a new programme: The BSc in Advanced Engineering Technology which will lead to a Bachelor of Science (Honours) NFQ level 8 award. In order to qualify, you will already need to have gained an appropriate Level 7 qualification. The main target group for the programme is those students with engineering, science or equivalent qualifications.
The course has two basic aims;
The first being to equip the student with the appropriate skills to work as a technologist within the semiconductor, pharmaceutical or wireless or broader ICT sector. To ensure we are on the right track, the course content has been developed in conjunction with our industrial partners.
Secondly, in keeping with the overall ITT Dublin policy, the course is designed to meet the lifelong learning and career development needs of people employed in the high technology sector. Therefore, for those holding Level 7 technical qualifications this programme offers an opportunity to progress to a Level 8 qualification. We believe there is a large number of people who will be interested in enrolling on this programme.
In terms of structure, the course will run over several semesters in part-time mode. It’s up to each student to decide how many modules he or she can handle in a semester but it will usually be a maximum of three.

Graduates of the course will be able to:
- Select and apply advanced solutions in the areas of semiconductor materials or wireless systems or instrumentation systems based on knowledge of advanced electronic engineering technologies.
- Identify and solve advanced engineering technology problems in a specialised area.
- Contribute to the design of a system, component or process to meet specified needs and to carry out performance measurement of the design.
Understand the need for high ethical standards in the practice of engineering. - Work effectively as an individual, in teams and in multidisciplinary settings together with the capacity to undertake lifelong learning.
- Communicate effectively, through presentations and written reports with the engineering community, interdisciplinary groups and with society at large.
Entry Level
NFQ Level 7 award in engineering/science programme or equivalent qualification. All candidates must have suitable competence in written and spoken English and may be required to take an interview.Course Content / Timetable
Six modules are offered per stage. A student can choose to enroll for three modules per stage and complete the programme in two years. Each module has four contact hours, including labs, tutorials and any required continuous assessment activities. Each successfully completed module accumulates five credits towards the named award. While taking the programme students will be required to choose elective subjects from the following specialisations; semiconductor technology, instrumentation, & wireless communications.
Career Opportunities
Graduates will have system-engineering skills and expertise that will be of particular value to the semiconductor, pharmaceutical and wireless industries. It is likely that many of the course participants will already be employed in one of these sectors and this qualification will help move their career to the next level.Graduate Profiles
