Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (FESCAP)

About the Course

This Flexible Student Centered Access Programme is a new and innovative delivery mode for a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering. This mode allows the student to choose when they attend classes. The student must attend only eight hours per week and four Saturdays in each term. A student must attend one green session and one yellow session (please see below) allowing the following attendance flexibility:

FESCAP_Timetable
*Note: Classes will run on Thursday and Tuesday

  • Tuesday afternoon & evening
  • Tuesday & Thursday evening

The combinations allow the student to choose their own flexible attendance which facilitates day release, shift patterns and evening attendance.
Students can also change attendance pattern during the term. The course is delivered over three terms during each academic year.

Term 1 – September to January
Term 2 – February to May
Term 3 – May to July

Times of attendance:
Afternoon: 13.00 to 17.00
Evening: 18.00 to 22.00

Attendance is required for four Saturdays per term for laboratory work. This laboratory work will contribute to the assessment marks for the modules on offer. The time for Saturday labs is 9.00 to 17.00. Dates for the Saturday laboratories will be posted on the Institute website.

The aims of this programme are to provide the student with a nationally and internationally recognised qualification and to equip graduates to work in the current and next generation of engineering industries e.g. pharmaceutical, bioengineering, R & D, high value food processing, energy and environmental, design and high value electronics.

The programme also establishes the foundation knowledge for progression to further study.

Named Award: Bachelor of Engineering - NFQ Level 7
Programme code: TA_EAMECH_D
Duration: 4 years
Timetable: Flexible - See timetable above
Commences: September 2010

Entry Level

If under 23 years, applicants must have a grade D3 (ordinary level) in a minimum of five subjects in the Leaving Certificate examinations including a B3 in Ordinary Level mathematics. Mature students (over 23 years) may be exempted from this requirement and are eligible to apply. Any full FETAC (NCVA) Level 5/6 provided it contains a distinction in one of the following: C20174 Maths for Engineering, C20175 Maths for Computing, C20139 Maths. All applicants must have competence in spoken and written English. Eligible candidates may be interviewed.

Maths Entry Module
For students who are under 23 years and do not have the Maths requirement in their leaving certificate examinations, a short mathematics course will be offered in the Institute in both May and September. This course will be approximately 8 hours in contact and will be delivered in the evening. Full details can be found here .
